Aho-Corasick (1975) is a classic and very useful algorithm that finds all occurrences of multiple fixed strings in a single O(n) pass, and has been linear from the start. you build a trie from your set of patterns, add failure links between nodes, and scan the input once. at each character, every active candidate advances through the trie or falls back along a failure link. no quadratic blowup, no matter how many patterns or matches.
